California's bond and bail process allows inmates to secure release by posting bail, either through a bail bondsman or directly with the court. Recently arrested individuals can be located through the Sheriff's Department's online resources.

California offers same-day conditional voter registration through Election Day at vote centers and the Registrar's office. Voters must be U.S. Citizens, California residents, at least 18 years old, and not currently imprisoned or on parole for a felony conviction. Registration deadlines fall 15 days before Election Day for online and mail registration. The city conducts municipal elections for City Council and Mayor positions. The City Council has five members elected to four-year staggered terms, while the Mayor is directly elected to a two-year term. The next municipal election is scheduled for November 2026, when three City Council seats will appear on the ballot. City Council elections are non-partisan and held in November of even-numbered years. Voters can find their assigned polling place or vote center locations through the Registrar's website at https://www.ocvote.gov/voting/voting-locations by entering their address. Orange County uses a Vote Center model where any registered voter can cast a ballot at any vote center in Orange County during the 10-day voting period before and including Election Day. Election records that are public in California include voter registration lists, available with restrictions under California Elections Code, campaign finance reports searchable at https://www.fppc.ca.gov and locally through city clerks, candidate statements and filings available through the Registrar, and detailed precinct-level election results published at https://www.ocvote.gov/results. In the November 2024 presidential election, Orange County reported approximately 67% voter turnout with over 1.1 million ballots cast. On November 3, 2026, Lake Forest and Orange County voters will decide several significant races: California's gubernatorial election, as Governor Gavin Newsom's term expires January 2027; all 80 California State Assembly seats including the 73rd District covering the city; all 40 California State Senate seats with District 37 representing the area if up for election in the rotation; all 52 U.S. House seats including California's 40th Congressional District which includes the community; and countywide races for Orange County Supervisor (5th District includes the city), Orange County Assessor, District Attorney, Sheriff-Coroner, and Clerk-Recorder. California voters will also decide statewide ballot propositions on various policy issues, while local City Council races will appear on the ballot as noted above. California is an all vote-by-mail state where every registered voter automatically receives a ballot by mail. Voters may return ballots by mail, postmarked by Election Day, at official drop boxes throughout Orange County until 8 PM on Election Day, or at any vote center.
