The county was created in 1917 and is named for the Lake Okeechobee, which was itself named for Hitchiti words oki and chubi, meaning "big water".
The county government consists of a five-member Board of County Commissioners, elected from single-member districts. The Board is responsible for setting policy and enacting laws and regulations. The County Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the county.
The county is served by the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for law enforcement, and the Okeechobee County Fire Rescue, which is responsible for fire protection and emergency medical services.
The county is also served by the Okeechobee County School District, which operates public schools in the county.
