Pierce County is located in the U.S. state of Washington. The county seat and largest city is Tacoma. The county was formed out of Thurston County in 1852.
Pierce County is included in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Pierce County Council is the county's legislative authority. The county is divided into seven council districts, each of which elects one council member. The council members serve four-year terms. The county executive is elected by the voters of Pierce County.
The county is home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the U.S. military's largest installation in the Pacific Northwest. It is also home to Mount Rainier National Park, the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, and several other national and state parks.
