Powhatan County is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is part of the Greater Richmond Region and is located in the east-central part of the state. The county seat is Powhatan.

The county government is made up of a Board of Supervisors, which is the governing body of the county. The Board is composed of five members, each elected from a single-member district. The Board is responsible for setting policy, levying taxes, and approving the county budget.

The county is served by a Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for law enforcement and maintaining the county jail. The Sheriff's Office is headed by an elected Sheriff.

Powhatan County Virginia court jurisdiction is the 11th Judicial Circuit of Virginia. The Circuit Court has jurisdiction over civil cases with a value of more than $25,000, criminal cases where the punishment may be confinement in state prison, and all other matters assigned to it by law. The Circuit Court also has jurisdiction over appeals from the General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
