Prince George's County has a total area of 498 square miles. The county is primarily located just to the east of Washington, D.C. The county seat is Upper Marlboro, though it has its own charter, independent of the county.
The government of Prince George's County, Maryland is governed by a County Council consisting of nine members, seven of whom are elected from individual districts, each with a population of approximately 125,000, and 2 are elected at-large from the entire county.
The county executive is elected to a four-year term in office by the voters of Prince George's County. The county executive is responsible for overseeing the entire county government and its departments.
The county's major cities are Bowie, College Park, Laurel, Greenbelt and Hyattsville.
Prince George's County is home to several parks and cultural attractions such as Six Flags America, Merriweather Post Pavilion, the National Harbor, the Prince George's County Public Schools system, the Prince George's County Public Library system, and Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
The county's public transportation system, The Bus, provides commuter service to downtown Washington, DC, as well as local transportation options within the county. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) provides Metrorail and Metrobus services within Prince George's County.
