Putnam County is located in north-central Illinois and is part of the Ottawa-Peru, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Hennepin. The county was formed in 1825.
Putnam County is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners. The board is elected from seven districts within the county. The board is responsible for setting the county budget, levying taxes, and making policy decisions. The board meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
The county is home to the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, which is a popular destination for fishing, camping, and hiking. The park is also home to the historic Hennepin Canal, which was built in the late 19th century to connect the Illinois River to the Mississippi River.
The county is also home to the Putnam County Fair, which is held annually in August. The fair features a variety of events, including a carnival, livestock shows, and a demolition derby.
