About Red River County, Texas
Red River County is governed by a Commissioners Court. The court consists of a county judge, elected county-wide, and four commissioners, each elected from a single-member district.
Red River County is located in the northeastern corner of Texas. It is bordered by Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the east, Bowie County to the south, and Lamar County to the west. The county seat is Clarksville. The county was created in 1836 and organized in 1837. It is named for the Red River, which forms its northern boundary.
The county is also home to a number of historical sites, such as the Red River County Courthouse, the historic Red River County Jail, the historic Hanging Tree, and the Clarksville Historic District.
Agriculture is an important part of the local economy, with cotton, soybeans, hay, and grain sorghum being the primary crops. Forestry is also a major industry in the area.
The county is served by the Clarksville Independent School District, which operates four elementary schools, one junior high school, and one high school. The county has a total area of 968 square miles, of which 945 square miles is land and 23 square miles is water. The county seat, Clarksville, is located at the junction of US Highway 82 and US Highway 37.
