About Saint Marys County, Maryland
St. Mary's County is located in the southern part of Maryland, on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It is the second oldest county in Maryland, and was established in 1637. The county seat is Leonardtown, and the largest city is Lexington Park.
Maryland's St. Mary's County is governed by a five-member Board of County Commissioners. The Commissioners are elected by the citizens of the county to serve four-year terms. The Board of County Commissioners is responsible for setting policy, enacting laws, and overseeing the county's budget.
The county is also served by a County Executive, who is elected to a four-year term. The County Executive is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the county government.
St. Mary's County is home to several military installations, including Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Naval Support Facility Indian Head, and Webster Field.
The county is also home to several state parks, including Point Lookout State Park, St. Clements Island State Park, and St. Mary's River State Park.
