San Juan County, Colorado Public Records

San Juan County is located in the southwestern corner of Colorado and is the ninth least populous county in the state. The county seat is Silverton. The county was created in 1876 and named for the San Juan Mountains.

The county government is composed of a three-member Board of County Commissioners, elected at-large to staggered four-year terms. Other elected officials include the Sheriff, Coroner, Assessor, Clerk and Recorder, Treasurer, and Surveyor.

The county is home to the San Juan National Forest, which covers over 1.8 million acres and is the largest national forest in Colorado. The county also contains the Weminuche Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in Colorado. The county is also home to the San Juan Skyway, a National Scenic Byway.

San Juan district courts preside over civil trials of $15,000 and above, criminal, probate, juvenile, domestic relations, mental health cases and appeals from county courts.
