About Shelby County, Missouri
Shelby County is located in the east-central portion of Missouri and is part of the Hannibal Micropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Shelbyville.
Shelby County is governed by a three-member County Commission, which is elected in staggered four-year terms. The County Commission is responsible for setting the county budget, levying taxes, and making policy decisions. The County Commission also appoints a County Clerk, who is responsible for keeping records of all county business.
The county is also served by a Prosecuting Attorney, Sheriff, and Coroner, all of whom are elected to four-year terms. The Prosecuting Attorney is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in the county. The Sheriff is responsible for enforcing the law and maintaining order in the county. The Coroner is responsible for investigating deaths and determining the cause of death.
Shelby County is part of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, which also includes Marion, Lewis, and Ralls Counties.
