Vernon County is located in the west-central part of Missouri and is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Nevada.
Vernon County is governed by a three-member county commission, which is elected in staggered four-year terms. The county also has a county court, which is composed of a presiding judge and two associate judges.
Vernon County is home to several state parks, including Big Lake State Park, which offers camping, fishing, and boating. The county is also home to the Nevada State Fish Hatchery, which is the largest state-owned fish hatchery in Missouri.
