Wahkiakum County is located in the southwestern corner of Washington State. The county seat and only incorporated city is Cathlamet. The county was formed out of Cowlitz County on April 25, 1854. The county is part of the Longview, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county government is composed of three elected commissioners, a prosecuting attorney, auditor, treasurer, sheriff, and assessor. The county is governed by the Wahkiakum County Charter, which was adopted in 1978. The county is divided into three commissioner districts, each of which elects one commissioner. The county is also served by a Superior Court judge, who is elected countywide.
The economy of Wahkiakum County is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The county also has a number of small businesses, including a few wineries. The county is served by two rivers, the Columbia and the Cowlitz, and is home to a number of marinas and other recreational areas.
