The history of Wrightsville dates to the early 18th century. The site was known as "Wright's Ferry" after John Wright, who established a ferry crossing at this location on the Susquehanna River in 1730. This ferry crossing was one of the most important transportation links in colonial Pennsylvania, connecting eastern Pennsylvania with the western frontier. A covered bridge spanning the Susquehanna connected Wrightsville and Columbia and was the longest covered bridge in the world when completed in the 1840s. During the Civil War, on June 28, 1863, Confederate forces under General John B. Gordon advanced toward Wrightsville as part of Jubal Early's raid into Pennsylvania. Union militia and local defenders burned the covered bridge to prevent Confederate forces from crossing to the east bank of the Susquehanna. The fire spread to Wrightsville, causing significant property damage, but Union defenders successfully prevented the Confederate advance. This engagement represents one of the northernmost advances of Confederate forces in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War. Today, Wrightsville Borough is governed by a mayor and borough council.
