Registration must be completed 25 days before any election. While New York doesn't require voter ID for registration, new registrants who signed up by mail and haven't previously voted may need identification when first voting. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or other government document showing name and address. Municipal elections for the village happen each March, when residents elect the Mayor and Village Trustees. Most village positions follow a two-year cycle. The next regularly scheduled village election takes place in March 2026, when voters will choose village board members. Residents also participate in Town of Bolivar elections for town supervisor, town council members, town clerk, and other positions during November of odd-numbered years. Voters can find their assigned polling place using the locator at voterlookup.elections.ny.gov or by contacting the Allegany County Board of Elections. Assignments are based on residence address and election district. Voting locations typically include the Bolivar-Richburg School or other public buildings designated by the Board of Elections. Polls open at 6:00 AM and close at 9:00 PM on Election Day. Under New York Election Law, certain election records are public including voter registration lists (available to candidates and political parties with restrictions), campaign finance disclosure reports filed with the State Board of Elections, candidate petition filings, and election results by district. New York will hold gubernatorial elections that year, with the Governor and Lieutenant Governor positions on the ballot. All 150 seats in the New York State Assembly will be contested, including the district representing the area. County-level positions including County Legislature seats, County Clerk, Sheriff, and other offices will also appear, as 2026 is a county election year.Current federal, state, and local election schedules, ballot contests, candidate filings, and certified results for Bolivar voters are published by the New York State Board of Elections (https://elections.ny.gov/).S. House of Representatives seats will be contested. The community is part of New York's 23rd Congressional District. Local town positions may also appear on the ballot. New York offers absentee voting by mail for voters who meet specific criteria including absence from the county on Election Day, illness or disability, or being a patient in a hospital. Absentee ballot applications must be received by the Allegany County Board of Elections at least seven days before the election if applying by mail, or the day before if applying in person. Absentee ballots can be requested online through the state Board of Elections website, and completed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days, or delivered in person by 9:00 PM on Election Day.
