Citizenship, age 18 by election date, and New Jersey residency for at least 30 days prior to the election. The borough conducts nonpartisan municipal elections on the second Tuesday in May, as New Jersey law requires for boroughs, to fill Borough Council seats and other municipal offices. The Mayor of Brielle is selected by the Borough Council from among its own members. Three council seats will be up for election on May 13, 2025, on a three-year staggered basis. During the November 2024 presidential election, Monmouth County reported approximately 65% voter turnout with over 340,000 ballots cast from approximately 520,000 registered voters, demonstrating strong civic engagement across the area. The November 3, 2026 election will bring several significant races to local voters. All 120 seats in the New Jersey Legislature will be on the ballot, including 40 State Senate seats and 80 General Assembly seats, as the state conducts legislative elections in odd-numbered years following redistricting. Monmouth County offices such as County Clerk, Surrogate, and Sheriff may be contested, and various local boards and commissions may appear depending on term schedules. The U.S. Senate seat currently held by Cory Booker will not be up in 2026, with the next election in 2027 or 2028, and the Governor's race occurs in 2025 rather than 2026. The 2026 federal midterm will include all of New Jersey's 12 U.S. House of Representatives seats. Brielle is located in New Jersey's 4th Congressional District, currently represented by Congressman Chris Smith. New Jersey offers mail-in voting, formerly called absentee voting, to all registered voters. Applications can be submitted online through the Monmouth County Clerk's website, by mail, or in person, with a deadline of seven days before the election for mail applications.
