Cleveland County is located in the western part of North Carolina and was created in 1841. The county seat is Shelby, North Carolina and the county population is 97,666 as of 2019.

Cleveland County is governed by a seven-member Board of County Commissioners. The commissioners are elected from seven districts and serve four-year terms. The current chairman of the board is Ronnie Whetstine.

The county is also served by a sheriff, district attorney, clerk of court, register of deeds, and other county officials.

The economy of Cleveland County is largely based on agriculture, manufacturing, and retail. Major employers in the county include Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Cleveland County Schools, and the City of Shelby.

The county is home to the Don Gibson Theater and the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. Education is provided by the Cleveland County School District, which serves 19,000 students. Cleveland County is also home to Cleveland Community College.
