Kentucky residents can register online through the state's portal at govoteky.com. You'll need a valid Kentucky driver's license or state ID card from the Transportation Cabinet. As an unincorporated community, Garfield doesn't hold municipal elections for local offices. Instead, residents participate in county, state, and federal contests. Candidate filings, ballot certifications, and precinct-level results are also public. During the November 2024 presidential election, Breckinridge County recorded turnout consistent with rural Kentucky's typical pattern, approximately 55 to 60 percent of registered voters cast ballots. The county has long favored Republican candidates in federal races and most statewide contests, reflecting the conservative political character of rural western Kentucky. Come November 3, 2026, Garfield voters will face several significant races. Kentucky won't hold a gubernatorial election that year, as the Governor serves a four-year term with the next race in 2027. However, one of Kentucky's U.S. Senate seats will be contested, Senator Mitch McConnell's seat is up, pending his decision about seeking another term. All of Kentucky's U.S. House seats will be on the ballot, including the 2nd Congressional District that serves Breckinridge County. Kentucky requires an excuse to vote absentee. Valid reasons include being absent from the county on Election Day, attending school outside the county, having a medical condition that prevents in-person voting, being 65 or older, serving in the military or living overseas, working as an election officer outside your precinct, or being incarcerated but not yet convicted.
