Its population was 53,924 as of the 2019 U.S. Census, and its main cities are Warrensburg, Knob Noster, Holden and Centerview. Warrensburg is the county's administrative seat. The County covers 582 square miles and is part of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.

Johnson County is governed by a three-member County Commission, which is elected in partisan elections for four-year terms. The County Commission is responsible for setting the budget, levying taxes, and making policy decisions. The County Commission appoints a County Administrator to oversee the day-to-day operations of the county.

The county is also served by a Prosecuting Attorney, Sheriff, Assessor, Collector, Clerk, Recorder of Deeds, and Public Administrator.
