Lignum, Virginia Public Records

Virginia residents can register to vote online through the Virginia Department of Elections at vote.virginia.gov, which provides online registration, voter record updates, and absentee ballot applications. To register in Virginia, individuals must be U.S. Citizens, residents of Virginia, at least 18 years old by the next general election, and not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court or convicted of a felony unless voting rights have been restored. The voter registration deadline is 22 days before any election. Virginia does not require party registration. As an unincorporated community, Lignum has no municipal government, mayor, or town council elections. Residents participate in Culpeper County, state, and federal elections instead. Voters can find their assigned polling location by using the Virginia Department of Elections' polling place lookup tool at vote.virginia.gov or by contacting the Culpeper County elections office. Polling places are assigned based on precinct boundaries, which may place different parts of the area in different precincts. Polls in Virginia are open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Election Day. Voters must present acceptable photo identification, including Virginia driver's license, U.S. Passport, employee ID card from any government agency, Virginia voter photo ID card (free from the elections office), student ID from any Virginia college or university, or other government-issued ID. Voters without acceptable ID can sign a statement and vote a provisional ballot. House of Representatives (Lignum is in Virginia's 7th Congressional District), all 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, and potentially Virginia Senate seats depending on district boundaries (half of the 40 Senate seats are elected every two years on a staggered basis). County-level offices on the ballot in 2026 may include Culpeper County Board of Supervisors seats, Constitutional Officers (Sheriff, Commonwealth's Attorney, Commissioner of Revenue, Treasurer, Clerk of Circuit Court serve four-year terms with elections in different cycles), and School Board members. Virginia holds elections for all Constitutional Officers and Board of Supervisors on staggered schedules set by the Virginia Constitution. Virginia offers several methods for absentee voting. No-excuse absentee voting is available to all registered voters. Absentee ballots can be requested online at vote.virginia.gov, by mail, fax, email, or in person at the Culpeper County elections office. The application deadline is 11 days before Election Day for mail ballots, though in-person absentee voting is available up to the Saturday before Election Day. Completed absentee ballots must be returned by mail (postmarked by Election Day and received by noon on the third day after the election) or delivered in person to the elections office by 7:00 PM on Election Day. Virginia also allows early in-person voting beginning 45 days before any election at the Culpeper County elections office.
