County profile
Sheriff & Law Enforcement. Macon County Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining law and order in the unincorporated areas of Macon County.
Police Departments. Law enforcement in Macon County is primarily provided by Macon County Sheriff's Office and the municipal police departments of cities like Montezuma and Oglethorpe. These agencies coordinate with the Sheriff's Office on major crimes and investigations that cross jurisdictional boundaries, making sure of full law enforcement coverage throughout Macon County.
Law Enforcement & Arrests. Macon County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for unincorporated areas of Macon County, Georgia. The current office operates under the elected Sheriff and provides patrol services, criminal investigations, court security, and operates Macon County detention facility. Arrest records in Macon County are considered public records under the Georgia Open Records Act (§ 50-18-70 et seq.), which requires that public records be made available for inspection and copying within three business days of a proper request. For recent arrest information, citizens may also contact the Sheriff's Office Records Division directly.

A point in either file is a location, not a property line: the sheet shows the opening on the surface, not the rooms under it. The record that shows what runs under a parcel is the mine map. The OSMRE National Mine Map Repository holds scanned underground mine maps and answers requests for a named mine or an area. Georgia publishes no abandoned mine inventory; the Dahlonega gold mines are not mapped by the state online.

Under O.C.G.A. 10-1-393.5, a commercial website must remove a person's booking photograph at no charge within 30 days of a written request in eight listed circumstances, such as charges never referred for prosecution, dismissed, or ending in acquittal.
