Maine Inmate Search

Maine prison inmates are held by the Maine Department of Corrections at the Maine State Prison in Warren, the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, the Mountain View Correctional Facility in Charleston, the Bolduc Correctional Facility and the Southern Maine Women's Reentry Center. County jails run by the 16 sheriffs hold pretrial detainees and people serving up to nine months, and some county jails hold state prisoners under boarding agreements.

The Department's Adult Prisoner and Probationer Search is the state lookup. Maine abolished parole in 1976, so the search covers prisoners and people on probation rather than parolees.

The Maine Adult Prisoner and Probationer Search runs on the MDOC number or the name and returns the MDOC number, name, date of birth, the facility or the probation region, the custody status and the earliest custody release date. It does not list the offenses; the judgment comes from the court. The same search lets you find the facility mailing address and deposit money to a prisoner account. County jail inmates on local charges are not included.

The Cumberland County Jail in Portland, the York County Jail in Alfred, the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, the Kennebec County jail in Augusta, the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn and the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset serve most of the population. Rosters vary: some sheriffs post a daily inmate list, others answer by phone. Portland Police, Bangor Police and the Maine State Police book into the county jail of the arrest.

The Maine Freedom of Access Act, 1 M.R.S. section 401 and following, makes the custody record public, and the Criminal History Record Information Act, 16 M.R.S. chapter 7, makes conviction data public while limiting non conviction data. The Department does not post photographs or offenses in its search. Medical and mental health records, classification and disciplinary files and the pre-sentence report are confidential. The Maine State Bureau of Identification sells a public conviction history check online for a fee.

Maine has no parole board and no parole for sentences imposed since 1976. A judge may split a sentence into a prison term followed by probation, and the Department's Division of Adult Community Corrections supervises probationers from regional offices, which is why they appear in the prisoner and probationer search. Supervised community confinement lets some prisoners finish a sentence at home under monitoring. The judgment sits with the clerk of the Unified Criminal Docket in the county where the case was heard.
