Maryland Inmate Search at a Glance

Maryland's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services holds state prisoners in institutions clustered at Jessup, Hagerstown, Cumberland and Westover, including the Jessup Correctional Institution, North Branch, Western Correctional Institution, Eastern Correctional Institution, Roxbury and the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women. Unlike most states, Maryland also runs the Baltimore City jail and central booking, so a person arrested in Baltimore is in state custody from the first night.

The DPSCS Inmate Locator covers state prisons and the Baltimore City detention facilities. The 23 county detention centers run by counties and sheriffs keep their own rosters.

Official sources on this page were checked on September 25, 2026.

County detention centers and local custody in Maryland

The Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Boyds and the Central Processing Unit in Rockville, the Prince George's County jail in Upper Marlboro, the Baltimore County Detention Center in Towson, the Anne Arundel County jails on Jennifer Road and Ordnance Road, the Howard County Detention Center in Jessup, the Harford County Detention Center in Bel Air and the Frederick County Adult Detention Center post inmate searches with charges and bond. County police in Montgomery, Prince George's, Baltimore County and Anne Arundel book into these facilities, while Baltimore City Police book into the state run central booking.

What Maryland inmate records show, and what stays private

The Maryland Public Information Act, General Provisions Article section 4-101 and following, makes the custody record public, and Maryland Judiciary Case Search publishes charges, dispositions and sentences for adult criminal cases statewide. The locator does not post photographs, and Maryland law restricts the release of booking photos by police in many cases. Medical and mental health records, classification, disciplinary and parole case files are closed. Criminal history from the CJIS Central Repository is available to the subject and to authorized employers, not to the public by name.

Parole, probation and release in Maryland

The Maryland Parole Commission holds parole hearings once a prisoner has served a quarter of the sentence for most offenses and posts hearing schedules with victim notification. Most sentences end earlier through diminution credits, which release the person to mandatory supervision. The Division of Parole and Probation supervises parolees, mandatory releases and probationers from offices in every county, so probationers appear in court records rather than in the locator. The judgment sits with the clerk of the circuit court of the convicting county.

Guide

When the search shows nothing

If the DPSCS locator returns nothing, check the county detention center search for the county of arrest, starting with Montgomery, Prince George's, Baltimore County or Anne Arundel, since only Baltimore City detention is in the state locator. Check Maryland Judiciary Case Search for the case and the sentence, the federal Bureau of Prisons locator for a federal case, including the federal prison in Cumberland, and VINELink for a recent release.

Straight answers

Maryland Inmate Search, questions

Does the Maryland inmate locator cover Baltimore City jail?

Yes. The state runs the Baltimore City detention facilities and central booking, so pretrial detainees in Baltimore appear in the DPSCS locator along with state prisoners.

Does the Maryland locator show the charges?

No. It shows the name, DOC ID, facility and status. Charges, dispositions and sentences are on Maryland Judiciary Case Search.

Where is someone arrested in Montgomery County held?

At the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville after arrest and then the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Boyds. The county posts an inmate search for both.

What is mandatory supervision in Maryland?

It is release before the end of the sentence based on diminution credits, without a parole hearing. The person is supervised by the Division of Parole and Probation until the full term date.
