McDonald County is located in the southwestern corner of Missouri and is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Pineville. The County was organized in 1849.

The county government is composed of three elected commissioners, a county clerk, a sheriff, a prosecuting attorney, a public administrator, a coroner, and a surveyor.

The county is divided into seven townships: Anderson, Lanagan, Pineville, Rocky Comfort, Southwest City, St. Paul, and Tiff City.

The county is served by the McDonald County R-I School District, which includes five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.

The county is also home to Crowder College, a two-year community college.
