Missouri prison inmates are held by the Missouri Department of Corrections in about twenty institutions, including the Jefferson City Correctional Center, Potosi, Crossroads and Western Missouri in Cameron, South Central in Licking, Southeast in Charleston, the Eastern Reception Center in Bonne Terre, Algoa, Moberly, Boonville, and the Chillicothe and Vandalia facilities for women. County jails and the St. Louis City Justice Center hold pretrial detainees and sentences of up to a year.

The Missouri Offender Search returns the DOC ID, name, race and sex, date of birth, the assigned location, which is a prison, a community supervision center or a probation and parole district, the status, the sentence and each offense with the county, the sentence length and the sentence date. People on probation and parole appear, and the search shows their supervising district. The search does not include county jail inmates on local charges.

The St. Louis City Justice Center is run by the city's Division of Corrections, while the St. Louis County jail in Clayton is run by the county's Department of Justice Services. The Jackson County Detention Center in Kansas City, the Greene County jail in Springfield, the Clay County Detention Center in Liberty, the St. Charles County jail, the Jefferson County jail in Hillsboro and the Boone County jail in Columbia post inmate searches with charges and bond. The Missouri Sunshine Law, chapter 610 of the Revised Statutes, makes the custody record public, and the DOC posts offenses, sentences and supervision status. The DOC does not publish photographs in the search. Sheriffs release booking photos, though Missouri law bars websites from charging to remove them. Medical and mental health files, the pre-sentence investigation, classification and disciplinary records are closed, and Missouri closes records of arrests that did not lead to charges within 30 days. The Missouri State Highway Patrol sells a name based open records check to anyone for a fee, and Case.net shows court cases statewide.

The Missouri Board of Probation and Parole holds parole hearings and sets release conditions, and the Division of Probation and Parole supervises parolees and probationers from district offices in every part of the state, which is why both groups appear in the offender search. Missouri's truth in sentencing rules require dangerous felons to serve 85 percent of the sentence.
