County houses of correction and local custody in New Hampshire
Each of the ten counties runs a house of correction under its county government rather than the sheriff. The Hillsborough County Department of Corrections in Manchester and the Rockingham, Merrimack, Strafford in Dover, Cheshire in Keene, Grafton in North Haverhill, Belknap, Carroll, Coos and Sullivan county facilities answer custody questions by phone, and several post inmate lists. Manchester Police, Nashua Police and the New Hampshire State Police hold arrestees until arraignment, then the court commits them to the county facility.

What New Hampshire inmate records show, and what stays private
The New Hampshire Right to Know Law, RSA chapter 91-A, opens the custody record of name, facility, status and release dates, which is what the locator shows. The Department does not post photographs or offenses. Medical and mental health records, classification and disciplinary files, the pre-sentence investigation and Parole Board case files are exempt. Criminal history from the State Police Central Repository is released to the subject and, with written consent, to employers; the public uses the superior court record instead.

Parole, probation and release in New Hampshire
New Hampshire sentences carry a minimum and a maximum term, and the Adult Parole Board hears the prisoner at the minimum date, posting its hearing schedule and decisions. The Department's Division of Field Services supervises parolees and probationers from district offices statewide, so probationers do not appear in the locator. The judgment sits with the clerk of the superior court of the convicting county, and the New Hampshire Judicial Branch provides case information through its electronic filing portal.

When the search shows nothing
If the New Hampshire locator returns nothing, contact the county house of correction for the county where the case was heard, starting with Hillsborough, Rockingham, Merrimack or Strafford, since pretrial detainees and sentences of up to a year are held by the county. Check the judicial branch's case information for the case, the federal Bureau of Prisons locator for a federal case, including the federal prison in Berlin, and VINELink for a recent release.

Federal & National Authoritative Sources
These federal and national sources complement New Hampshire's state-level records. They are the authoritative sources you should cross-check when New Hampshire state records are incomplete or out-of-state activity matters.
Federal BOP, Inmate Locator The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator returns federal inmates held since 1982 in any BOP facility, contract facility, or community corrections center.
VINELink, Victim Notification Operated by Appriss for the U.S. Department of Justice's victim-notification program. Free, anonymous registration for custody-change alerts across participating states.
U.S. Marshals, Prisoner Tracking The USMS Prisoner Tracking System is the authoritative source for federal detainees in pre-trial custody (before BOP designation).
