What New Mexico inmate records show, and what stays private

The New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act, NMSA 14-2-1 and following, makes the custody record public, and the Offender Search posts photographs, offenses, sentences and projected release dates. Detention centers publish booking information. Medical and mental health records, the pre-sentence report, classification and disciplinary files and Parole Board case files are exempt. Criminal history from the Department of Public Safety requires fingerprints and is limited to the subject and authorized employers; the public uses the New Mexico Courts case lookup, which is free and covers district, magistrate and metropolitan courts statewide.

Parole, probation and release in New Mexico

New Mexico attaches a fixed parole term of one or two years to most felony sentences, so nearly every prisoner leaves to parole supervised by the Probation and Parole Division, and the Adult Parole Board sets conditions and hears violations and the release of people serving life. Probation is imposed by the district court and supervised by the same division, which is why both groups appear in the Offender Search. The judgment sits with the clerk of the district court of the convicting county.

When the search shows nothing

If the NMCD search returns nothing, check the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center custody list for an Albuquerque arrest or the detention center roster for Dona Ana, Santa Fe, San Juan or Sandoval county, since pending cases and sentences of up to a year stay in the jail. Check the free New Mexico Courts case lookup for the case, the federal Bureau of Prisons locator for a federal case and VINELink for a recent release.

Federal & National Authoritative Sources

These federal and national sources complement New Mexico's state-level records. They are the authoritative sources you should cross-check when New Mexico state records are incomplete or out-of-state activity matters.

Federal BOP, Inmate Locator The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator returns federal inmates held since 1982 in any BOP facility, contract facility, or community corrections center.

VINELink, Victim Notification Operated by Appriss for the U.S. Department of Justice's victim-notification program. Free, anonymous registration for custody-change alerts across participating states.

U.S. Marshals, Prisoner Tracking The USMS Prisoner Tracking System is the authoritative source for federal detainees in pre-trial custody (before BOP designation).
