Virginia residents can register to vote online through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizens Portal at https://www.elections.virginia.gov/registration/. The registration deadline is 22 days before any election. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, Virginia residents, at least 18 years old by the next general election, and not currently declared mentally incapacitated by a court or convicted of a felony unless rights have been restored. Valid identification isn't required to register, but voters must provide their Social Security number or Virginia DMV customer number. First-time voters who registered by mail without providing identification must bring an acceptable ID to the polls. As an unincorporated community, Newtown has no municipal government and therefore holds no mayoral or town council elections. Instead, residents vote in King and Queen County Board of Supervisors elections, which take place in November of odd-numbered years. Residents also participate in state and federal elections including Virginia General Assembly races for the House of Delegates and State Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and presidential elections. After entering their name and date of birth or address, voters can view their precinct, polling location, and a sample ballot. The county typically operates several precincts across its jurisdiction. Election records available to the public in Virginia include voter registration lists, which can be purchased for legitimate election related purposes under Virginia Code § 24.2-405, and campaign finance reports filed with the Virginia Department of Elections and accessible at https://apps.elections.virginia.gov/SBE_CSV/CF/Index. Also public are candidate filings and ballot access petitions, along with official election results by precinct. However, 2026 will feature elections for all 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates and all seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, including Virginia's 1st Congressional District which includes King and Queen County. County-level positions including the Board of Supervisors, Constitutional Officers such as Sheriff, Commissioner of Revenue, Treasurer, Commonwealth's Attorney, and Clerk of Circuit Court, along with School Board may also appear depending on term schedules. Any registered voter may vote absentee by mail or in-person without providing an excuse. Absentee voting by mail requires submitting an application, available at https://www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/absentee-voting/, to the King and Queen County Registrar by 5:00 PM on the Tuesday before Election Day, which is 11 days before the election. In-person absentee voting is available at the Registrar's Office beginning 45 days before an election and ending at 5:00 PM on the Saturday before Election Day. Voted absentee ballots must be received by the Registrar by 7:00 PM on Election Day to be counted.
