2Federal & National Authoritative Sources
These federal and national sources complement Pennsylvania's state-level records. They are the authoritative sources you should cross-check when Pennsylvania state records are incomplete or out-of-state activity matters.
Federal law governing who may receive personal information from a state motor vehicle record. Access is limited to 14 enumerated permissible uses (court, insurance, research, bulk marketing with opt-in).

Federal REAL ID Act standards for state-issued IDs accepted at TSA checkpoints and federal buildings. Enforcement is in effect; this explains what Pennsylvania residents must bring.

Pennsylvania DMV Records, FAQ
Can anyone pull my driving record?
No. The federal DPPA restricts access to 14 permitted purposes. Your employer, insurer, and courts can, with appropriate justification; random strangers cannot.
What is REAL ID and do I need one?
REAL ID is a federal standard for state IDs. After the enforcement deadline, a REAL-ID-compliant license or an alternative (passport, military ID) is required to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings. A standard license still works for driving.
How do I check vehicle recalls?
NHTSA's VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls returns every open safety recall for your specific vehicle, free.
Who issues crash reports?
In Pennsylvania, the law enforcement agency that responded to the crash files the official report, state police for state highways, sheriff or local police for other roads. The DMV or DOT usually aggregates and distributes copies.
