Pennsylvania holds state prisoners under the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections in state correctional institutions such as SCI Phoenix in Collegeville, SCI Camp Hill, where every new commitment is processed, SCI Huntingdon, SCI Dallas, SCI Fayette, SCI Greene, SCI Albion, SCI Somerset, SCI Muncy and SCI Cambridge Springs for women, and a dozen more. County jails run by county governments hold pretrial detainees and sentences with a maximum under two years, and judges may send sentences with a two to five year maximum to either system.

The DOC Inmate Locator is the state lookup. It covers people in state custody, keyed to the inmate number or the name.

The Pennsylvania Inmate Locator returns the inmate number, name, date of birth, race and sex, citizenship, the committing county, the current location and the permanent location. It does not list the offenses or the sentence; those are on the Unified Judicial System web portal, which posts free criminal dockets for every county. People on parole are not in the locator, and the Parole Board answers questions about them.

The Philadelphia Department of Prisons runs the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility and the other jails on State Road and posts an inmate locator. The Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh, the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville, the Bucks County Correctional Facility in Doylestown, the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Delaware County, the Lancaster County Prison, the York County Prison, the Lehigh County Jail in Allentown and the Luzerne County Correctional Facility publish inmate searches as well. Philadelphia Police and Pittsburgh Police book into the county systems, and the Pennsylvania State Police book into the county jail of the arrest.

The Pennsylvania Right to Know Law, 65 P.S. section 67.101 and following, makes the custody record public, and the Criminal History Record Information Act opens conviction data to anyone. The locator posts no photographs or offenses; the court dockets carry the charges and sentence. County prisons post booking information and most release booking photos. Medical and mental health records, the pre-sentence investigation, classification and disciplinary files and Parole Board case files are exempt. The Pennsylvania State Police sells a name based conviction check called PATCH to anyone online for a fee.

Pennsylvania sentences carry a minimum and a maximum term, and the Parole Board interviews the prisoner at the minimum date, posts its decisions and supervises parolees from district offices across the state. County courts run their own probation and parole departments for county sentences, so those cases appear in court records. Sentences with a maximum under two years are served in the county prison and paroled by the sentencing judge. The judgment sits with the clerk of courts of the convicting county and on the UJS portal.
