Voters must provide a valid West Virginia driver's license or state ID number, or the last four digits of their Social Security number. First-time voters who register by mail may be required to provide identification when voting. Because the community is unincorporated, there are no municipal elections for mayor or town council; residents vote in county, state, and federal elections only. Nicholas County elections include races for County Commission (three commissioners elected to staggered six-year terms), County Clerk, Sheriff, Assessor, Prosecuting Attorney, and various other county offices. Local voters can locate their assigned polling place using the West Virginia Secretary of State's polling place lookup tool at www.sos.wv.gov/elections/Pages/GoVoteWV.aspx, which requires entering name and date of birth or address. Most residents vote at precinct polling locations in or near the area, typically assigned to nearby schools or community centers. West Virginia election records that are public include voter registration lists (available for purchase by qualified requesters), campaign finance reports filed by candidates and political committees (searchable at www.cfrs.wv.gov), candidate filings and candidate information, and precinct-level election results. West Virginia voters may request absentee ballots for specific statutory reasons including absence from the county on Election Day, illness or disability, or employment obligations. Absentee ballot applications are available from the Nicholas County Clerk and must be received by six days before the election. Early in-person voting is available at the Nicholas County Clerk's office beginning 13 days before Election Day and ending three days before Election Day.
