Utah Inmate Search

Utah holds state prisoners under the Utah Department of Corrections at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City, which opened in 2022 to replace the Draper prison, and the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. Utah also pays county jails to hold a large share of its state inmates under its jail contracting program, so a person sentenced to prison may serve most of the term in the Beaver, Sanpete, Box Elder, Duchesne or another county jail. County jails hold pretrial detainees and sentences of up to a year as well.

The Department's Offender Search is the state lookup for people in custody and people on probation and parole supervised by Adult Probation and Parole.

The Utah Offender Search runs on the name or the offender number and returns the offender number, name, date of birth, race and sex, the facility, which may be a state prison or a contracting county jail, or the supervising Adult Probation and Parole office, the status, the offenses with the county and sentence, and the next Board of Pardons and Parole hearing date where set. Utah sentences are indeterminate, so the record shows a range rather than a release date until the Board sets one.

The Salt Lake County Metro Jail posts an inmate lookup with booking dates, charges and bail, as do the Utah County Jail in Spanish Fork, the Davis County Jail in Farmington, the Weber County Correctional Facility in Ogden, the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility near Hurricane, the Cache County Jail in Logan and the Tooele County Detention Center. Salt Lake City Police and the Utah Highway Patrol book into the county jail of the arrest, and many jails hold state inmates under contract who appear in both the jail roster and the state search.

Utah's Government Records Access and Management Act, Utah Code title 63G chapter 2, classifies the custody record as public: name, offender number, facility, offenses and sentence. The Department does not post photographs, and Utah law limits the release of booking photos before conviction. Medical and mental health records, the pre-sentence report, classification and disciplinary files and Board of Pardons and Parole case files are private or protected. Criminal history from the Bureau of Criminal Identification requires the subject's consent or fingerprints; the public uses the courts' Xchange system, which charges a subscription, or the free case search for district court calendars.

Utah's Board of Pardons and Parole holds more power than most parole boards because sentences are indeterminate, for example one to fifteen years, and the Board sets the actual release date at a hearing after the person enters prison. Adult Probation and Parole, a division of the Department, supervises parolees and felony probationers from regional offices, which is why supervision cases appear in the Offender Search. The judgment sits with the clerk of the district court of the convicting county.
