Vermont Inmate Search at a Glance
Vermont runs a unified correctional system. The Vermont Department of Corrections holds pretrial detainees and sentenced prisoners in the same facilities: Northern State in Newport, Northwest State in Swanton, Southern State in Springfield, Marble Valley in Rutland and the Chittenden Regional facility in South Burlington, which holds women. There are no county jails, and the county sheriffs transport prisoners rather than hold them. Because of limited beds, Vermont also houses some sentenced prisoners at a private prison in Mississippi under contract.
The Department's offender locator and VINELink together provide custody status for everyone in Vermont custody, including those held out of state.

What Vermont inmate records show, and what stays private
The Vermont Public Records Act, 1 V.S.A. section 315 and following, makes the basic custody record public, and the Department releases name, facility, status and release date. Vermont does not post booking photographs, and the Department does not publish sentence details online. Medical and mental health records, the pre-sentence investigation, classification and disciplinary files and Parole Board case files are exempt. The Vermont Crime Information Center sells a name based conviction record check to anyone for a fee, and the Judiciary's portal shows criminal cases.

Parole, probation and release in Vermont
The Vermont Parole Board hears prisoners at the minimum sentence date and posts its schedule and decisions, and the Department's probation and parole officers supervise releases and probationers from district offices in every county. Vermont uses furlough programs that let some prisoners finish a sentence in the community under Department supervision before parole. The judgment sits with the clerk of the criminal division of the superior court in the county where the case was heard.

When the search shows nothing
If VINELink and the offender locator show nothing for Vermont, the person was probably cited and released or released on conditions at arraignment: check the Vermont Judiciary's public portal for the pending case. A probationer is supervised by Department probation officers and appears in court records. Check the federal Bureau of Prisons locator for a federal case.
