Registering to vote is straightforward for residents of the area. California's online registration system at registertovote.ca.gov allows eligible citizens to sign up from home. The state also offers same-day voter registration, so anyone who misses the standard deadline can still register and vote conditionally through Election Day at vote centers or the Registrar's office. To qualify, applicants must be U.S. Citizens, California residents, at least 18 years old by Election Day, and not currently imprisoned or on parole for a felony conviction. A valid California driver's license or ID number, or the last four digits of a Social Security number, is required. While the standard registration deadline falls 15 days before an election, conditional registration remains available afterward. Because Vernalis is an unincorporated community without city government, there are no mayoral or city council elections here. Residents vote in county, state, and federal contests only. The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors holds elections in even-numbered years across five supervisorial districts. This community falls within District 5, which covers much of western San Joaquin County. Supervisors serve four-year terms on a staggered schedule. San Joaquin County has adopted California's Vote Center model, allowing voters to cast ballots at any vote center countywide during early voting and on Election Day rather than being restricted to a single precinct location. Public election records in California include voter registration lists available to candidates and political committees under Elections Code § 2188, campaign finance disclosures searchable at cal-access.sos.ca.gov, candidate statements and filings, precinct-level results, and rosters of vote-by-mail requests. These records are accessible through the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters and the California Secretary of State. More than 180,000 ballots were cast out of roughly 285,000 registered voters countywide. Vernalis, as a small unincorporated community, contributed a modest portion of that total. California's gubernatorial race heads the ballot, with Governor Gavin Newsom termed out and a new governor to be chosen. All statewide constitutional offices, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner, and Superintendent of Public Instruction, will also be up for election. There's no U.S. Senate race in 2026, as both seats are on different cycles (2024 and 2028). Voters will elect members of the California State Assembly (all 80 seats, two-year terms) and half of the State Senate (20 of 40 seats, four-year terms). San Joaquin County races will include County Supervisor (depending on district cycle), Sheriff-Coroner, District Attorney, Assessor, Auditor-Controller, Clerk-Recorder, and Treasurer-Tax Collector, many of which appear in midterm cycles. School board and special district races may round out the ballot. California's universal vote-by-mail system sends every registered voter a ballot automatically, starting 29 days before Election Day. Voters can complete and return it by mail (postage-paid), drop it at an official ballot drop box, or bring it to any vote center in San Joaquin County. Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days, or deposited at a drop box or vote center by 8:00 p.m. On Election Day.
