Wheaton is a small city and the county seat of Traverse County, Minnesota, located in the far western part of the state near the South Dakota border. With a population to 1,500 residents, Wheaton is the governmental and commercial hub for Traverse County, one of Minnesota's smallest and most sparsely populated counties. The city lies in the heart of the Minnesota Prairie region, surrounded by fertile agricultural land and the characteristic glacially flattened terrain of the Red River Valley's eastern margins. Traverse County was established and is named for Lake Traverse, which occupies part of the northeastern corner of the county. The county has a land area of approximately 574 square miles and a population, making it one of the smallest county populations in Minnesota. The extreme sparseness of population reflects both the remote location and the high degree of agricultural mechanization that has reduced the rural workforce over the past century. Wheaton was platted in 1883 following the arrival of the Great Northern Railway, which provided the transportation link necessary for the development of commercial grain farming in the region. The city was incorporated as the county seat and developed the essential institutions of a county government center—courthouse, hotel, bank, newspaper, and commercial businesses serving the surrounding farming community. The discovery and exploitation of the area's exceptional soils for wheat and later corn, soybean, and sunflower production made Traverse County one of Minnesota's most productive agricultural areas relative to its size. The scene around Wheaton is dominated by vast, flat agricultural fields broken by occasional wetland "potholes" that are important waterfowl nesting habitat. The Prairie Pothole Region of which Traverse County is a part is of continental significance for migratory bird populations, and the area attracts birders and wildlife enthusiasts during spring and fall migrations. Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge, located partially in Traverse County, provides protected habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. Traverse County government operates from Wheaton, with the County Auditor/Treasurer, Recorder, Assessor, and other officials providing services to county residents. Public records including property records, vital statistics, and court documents are maintained at the county courthouse and accessible under Minnesota's Government Data Practices Act. The Traverse County Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement throughout the county.
