Yoakum County is located in the South Plains region of Texas. It is bordered by Terry County to the north, Cochran County to the east, Gaines County to the south, and Hockley County to the west. The county seat is Plains.

Yoakum County is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, with each member representing one of four precincts. The county judge presides over the court. Other county officials include a sheriff, tax assessor-collector, county clerk, district clerk, and treasurer.

The county is served by the Plains Independent School District. The county is also home to South Plains College, a two-year community college.

The economy of Yoakum County is largely based on agriculture. Oil and gas production is also an important part of the economy.
