Sheriff & Law Enforcement. Barnes County Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining law and order in the unincorporated areas of Barnes County.
Police Departments. In addition to Barnes County Sheriff's Office, law enforcement in Barnes County is provided by municipal police departments, including the Valley City Police Department.
Law Enforcement & Arrests. Barnes County Sheriff's Office, located at 230 4th Street NW in Valley City, North Dakota 58072, provides primary law enforcement services throughout Barnes County's unincorporated areas and supports municipal agencies when requested. Barnes County Jail, operated by the Sheriff's Office at the same location, houses pre-trial detainees and sentenced individuals. Inmate information and jail rosters can be obtained by contacting the Sheriff's Office directly during business hours, as Barnes County does not currently maintain a real-time online inmate search portal. Valley City operates its own Police Department at 250 3rd Street NE, Valley City, ND 58072, providing municipal law enforcement services within city limits. Smaller communities may contract with the Sheriff's Office or rely on county coverage. Arrest records in Barnes County are considered public records under North Dakota Century Code Section 44-04-18, which governs access to public records in North Dakota.
