Barton County is located in the southwestern corner of Missouri and is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Lamar. The County was organized on February 14, 1855.

The county is governed by a three-member county commission, with one commissioner elected from each of the three districts in the county. The county also has a sheriff, prosecuting attorney, assessor, collector, and other elected officials.

The county is home to several state parks, including Stockton State Park, which is located on the shore of Stockton Lake. The county also has several historic sites, including the Barton County Courthouse, which was built in 1887 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
