As an unincorporated community, Big Island does not hold municipal elections for mayor or town council. Instead, residents vote in Bedford County Board of Supervisors elections, Virginia General Assembly elections for both the House of Delegates and State Senate, and federal elections for U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and President. The County Board of Supervisors is elected by district, with the community falling within one of Bedford County's magisterial districts; supervisors serve four-year staggered terms. In the November 2024 presidential election, Bedford County reported approximately 55-58% voter turnout with around 48,000 registered voters countywide. For the November 3, 2026 general election, voters in the area will decide several significant races: all 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates are up for election (two-year terms), 20 of the 40 Virginia State Senate seats (four-year staggered terms, depending on district), one U.S. Senate seat may be contested (Virginia's senators are Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, with terms expiring in different years), and Bedford County constitutional officers including Sheriff, Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer, Commonwealth's Attorney, and Clerk of Circuit Court (all four-year terms). Voters should verify specific district and local races with the Bedford County Registrar as the 2026 election approaches. Virginia allows absentee voting by mail for any registered voter without requiring an excuse. Absentee ballot applications can be submitted online at https://www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/absentee-voting, by mail, fax, email, or in person to the Registrar's office. The application deadline is 11 days before the election (5 PM), and completed ballots must be received by 7 PM on Election Day.
