The city conducts municipal elections for Mayor and City Council typically in odd-numbered years, with the next regular election scheduled for April 2025. Candidate information and local ballot measures are available through the City Clerk at 303-582-5251 or the Gilpin County elections office. Specific ward and at-large council seats are staggered on varying terms. Residents vote at assigned polling locations, which can be found using the Colorado Voter Information tool at www.govotecolorado.gov by entering name and date of birth. Colorado operates as a universal mail ballot state, all active registered voters automatically receive mail ballots approximately 22 days before each election. Voters may return ballots by mail (postmarked by Election Day), at 24-hour ballot drop boxes located throughout Gilpin County including locations in Central City and Black Hawk, or vote in-person at Voter Service and Polling Centers during the early voting period and on Election Day. Public election records in Colorado include voter registration lists (available for purchase for political purposes under § 1-2-227), campaign finance reports through the Colorado Secretary of State's TRACER database, candidate filings and statements, and precinct-by-precinct election results published by the Clerk and Recorder. Colorado does not have a U.S. Senate seat up in 2026 (Senator Bennet's term expires 2028, Senator Hickenlooper's in 2027), but voters will elect U.S. Representative for Colorado's 2nd Congressional District, all Colorado state legislature seats including State Senate District 13 and State House District 33, the Colorado Governor's office (if scheduled in 2026; Colorado governors serve four-year terms with the last election in 2022, making the next gubernatorial race 2026), and Gilpin County offices including County Commissioners, Sheriff, Clerk and Recorder, Treasurer, Assessor, Coroner, and Surveyor, most of which are four-year terms elected in midterm years. Municipal offices may also appear on the ballot if scheduled for even-year elections.
