Gilpin County is located in the central part of Colorado, approximately 25 miles west of Denver. It is bordered by Clear Creek County to the north, Boulder County to the east, Jefferson County to the south, and Grand County to the west. The county covers an area of approximately 184 square miles. The county seat is Central City.

Gilpin County is governed by a three-member Board of County Commissioners. The Commissioners are elected by the citizens of Gilpin County and serve four-year terms. The Board of County Commissioners is responsible for setting policy, adopting ordinances, levying taxes, and appropriating funds for the operation of county government.

The county is home to several historic mining towns, including Black Hawk, Central City, and Nevadaville. The county is also home to several state parks, including Golden Gate Canyon State Park, and Staunton State Park.
