Clatsop County is located in the northwest corner of Oregon, on the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by Washington to the north, Columbia County to the east, Tillamook County to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The county seat is Astoria.

Clatsop County was created on June 22, 1844, from the northern and western portions of the original Twality District. It was named for the Clatsop tribe of Native Americans, who lived along the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

The county government is composed of a Board of Commissioners, which is responsible for setting policy and overseeing the county's departments. The county also has a Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for law enforcement, and a District Attorney's Office, which is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases. The county also has a number of other departments, including Public Works, Planning and Development, and Health and Human Services.
