Daviess County is located in the northwest corner of Missouri and is part of the St. Joseph, MO–KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Gallatin. The county was organized on January 29, 1836.

The county is governed by a three-member county commission, elected in November of each year. Other elected officials include the sheriff, prosecuting attorney, assessor, collector, and public administrator.

The county is part of the Third Judicial Circuit, which also includes Harrison, Mercer, and Grundy counties. The circuit court is held in Gallatin.

The county is served by the Daviess County R-3 School District, which includes Gallatin High School, Gallatin Middle School, and Gallatin Elementary School.
