El Paso County is located in the westernmost part of Texas and is part of the El Paso-Las Cruces metropolitan area. The county seat is El Paso, the sixth-most populous city in Texas and the 19th-most populous city in the United States.

El Paso County is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, with the county judge as its presiding officer. The county judge is elected county-wide and serves as the chief administrator of the county. The other four members of the Commissioners Court are elected from single-member districts.

The county is home to the University of Texas at El Paso, the largest university in the county. It is also home to Fort Bliss, one of the largest military installations in the United States. El Paso County is also home to the El Paso Zoo, the El Paso Museum of Art, and the El Paso Museum of History.
