Flagler County was created in 1917 from parts of Saint Johns and Volusia counties.

The Board of County Commissioners is responsible for setting policy, adopting ordinances, levying taxes, and approving the budget. The County Administrator is responsible for carrying out the policies and directives of the Board of County Commissioners.

The county is served by two public school districts, Flagler County Schools and the Matanzas High School District. The county is also home to several higher education institutions, including the Flagler College, Daytona State College, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Flagler County is home to several state parks, including Bulow Creek State Park, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, and the Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park. It is also home to several nature preserves, including the Tomoka State Park and the Tomoka Marsh Aquatic Preserve. The county also has several golf courses, tennis courts, and other recreational facilities.
