Residents register to vote online through the California Secretary of State at https://registertovote.ca.gov/. California offers same-day conditional voter registration up through Election Day at vote centers and county elections offices. The voter registration deadline for most elections is 15 days before Election Day. Registered voters in California do not need to provide identification when voting in person unless they are first-time voters who registered by mail without providing a driver license number, state ID number, or the last four digits of their Social Security number. Voters need to be U.S. Citizens, California residents, at least 18 years old by Election Day, not currently serving a state or federal prison term for a felony conviction, and not currently found mentally incompetent to vote by a court. Because this is an unincorporated community, there are no municipal elections for mayor or city council. Lakehead residents vote in Shasta County elections for the five-member Board of Supervisors (District 1 represents the area), countywide offices including Sheriff, District Attorney, Assessor, Auditor-Controller, Clerk-Recorder, and Treasurer-Tax Collector. Residents also vote for special district boards that may provide services locally, including fire protection and cemetery districts.Current federal, state, and local election schedules, ballot contests, candidate filings, and certified results for Lakehead voters are published by the California Secretary of State (https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections). Voters can find their assigned polling place or vote center location by using the lookup tool at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place or by contacting the Shasta County Elections Division. The county transitioned to the California Voter's Choice Act model, which provides vote centers open for multiple days before Election Day rather than traditional single-day precinct polling places, allowing voters to cast ballots at any vote center in Shasta County. California public records law makes certain election records publicly accessible. Voter registration rolls (without birthdates or driver license numbers) are available for purchase for political or election purposes. Campaign finance disclosure statements filed by candidates and committees are public and searchable through the California Secretary of State's Cal-Access database at http://cal-access.sos.ca.gov/ for state-level campaigns, and through the Shasta County Elections office for local campaigns. Voters will also elect their U.S. Representative (the area is in California's 1st Congressional District), California State Senator (District 1), and California State Assembly member (District 1). There may be county ballot measures and state propositions. California is a universal vote-by-mail state: all registered voters automatically receive mail ballots for each election. Voters may return mail ballots by postal mail (no postage required as of 2024), at official drop boxes located throughout Shasta County, or at vote centers. Mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by the Shasta County elections office within seven days after the election to be counted. In-person voting at vote centers is also available starting approximately 10 days before Election Day through Election Day itself. Residents can request replacement ballots if their mail ballot is lost or damaged by contacting the Shasta County Elections Division.
