Citizens, Mississippi residents, at least 18 years old by election day, and not currently disenfranchised due to certain felony convictions. The voter registration deadline in Mississippi is 30 days before any election. Applicants must provide a Mississippi driver's license or identification card number, or the last four digits of their Social Security number. Mississippi requires voters to present acceptable photo identification at the polls, including driver's licenses, U.S. Passports, government employee IDs, student IDs from Mississippi colleges, tribal IDs, or a free Mississippi Voter Identification Card available from Circuit Clerk offices. As an unincorporated community, Mayhew does not hold separate municipal elections for mayor or city council. These county elections coincide with state general elections. Mississippi holds statewide elections for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and other state offices in odd-numbered years (most recently 2023, next in 2027). State legislative elections for the Mississippi House of Representatives and Mississippi Senate occur every four years. Local voters participate in U.S. House of Representatives elections for Mississippi's 1st Congressional District. U.S. Senate elections follow the regular six-year cycle, with Mississippi's Senate seats held by senators whose terms expire in different years. Residents can find their assigned polling place using the polling place locator tool at www.sos.ms.gov or by contacting the Lowndes County Circuit Clerk's office. The entire Mississippi House of Representatives (122 seats) and half of the Mississippi Senate (52 seats) will be on the ballot, as state legislative elections occur every four years with all House seats and alternating Senate seats. One of Mississippi's two U.S. Senate seats may be on the ballot depending on the election cycle (Senator Roger Wicker's seat is up in 2024, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith's in 2026). Mississippi's U.S. House seats, including the 1st Congressional District representing Lowndes County, will be contested. Various Lowndes County offices may also appear on the 2026 ballot depending on Lowndes County's election schedule. Judicial elections for Mississippi Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Circuit Court, and Chancery Court judgeships may also be decided if seats are up for election in that cycle. Mississippi offers absentee voting for voters who qualify under specific circumstances: voters who will be away from their county of residence on election day, voters with temporary or permanent physical disabilities, voters 65 years or older, persons responsible for the care of a dependent who is disabled or sick, and election workers assigned to a precinct other than their own. Absentee ballot applications are available from the Circuit Clerk's office and must be submitted in writing. The deadline for absentee ballot applications is seven days before the election (applications can be made as early as 45 days before). Absentee ballots must be received by the Circuit Clerk by 5:00 p.m. On election day. Election records that are public in Mississippi include voter registration lists (available for purchase for election related purposes), campaign finance reports (filed with the Mississippi Secretary of State's Office and searchable at www.sos.ms.gov/elections/campaign-finance), candidate qualifying information, and official election results by precinct. The Mississippi Secretary of State Elections Division website provides election results, candidate lists, ballot measure text and results, and voter statistics. Election night results and certified final results are posted online and available through the Lowndes County Circuit Clerk. Precinct-level data allows citizens to see how their immediate community voted on candidates and issues.
