The registration deadline is 25 days before any election. Voters must provide proof of identity and residence; acceptable documents include a driver's license, utility bill, or bank statement showing the voter's name and address. Same-day registration became available for early voting starting in 2023, though Election Day registration remains unavailable. As an unincorporated hamlet, Memphis does not hold its own municipal elections for mayor or city council. Instead, residents vote in Town of Van Buren elections for Town Supervisor, Town Board members, and Town Justices, typically held in odd-numbered years. Local voters also participate in Onondaga County elections for County Executive, County Legislature, Sheriff, County Clerk, and District Attorney, as well as New York State elections for Governor, State Senate, State Assembly, and federal elections for U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. The community is part of New York's 24th Congressional District and State Senate District 50. Early voting is available at designated sites throughout Onondaga County for 9 days prior to Election Day, including weekends.Current federal, state, and local election schedules, ballot contests, candidate filings, and certified results for Memphis voters are published by the New York State Board of Elections (https://elections.ny.gov/). Voters will also elect New York State Senate and Assembly members, Onondaga County Executive, County Clerk, and potentially county legislative seats. Local races for Town of Van Buren Supervisor and Board members will occur in 2025. Candidate filings, sample ballots, and local ballot measures are published on the Board of Elections website in advance of each election. Absentee ballots in New York are available to any voter who meets specific criteria, including absence from the county on Election Day, illness or disability, or duties related to primary care of the sick or disabled. As of 2023, New York allows early voting and no-excuse absentee voting for certain elections. Absentee ballot applications can be submitted online at https://absenteeballot.elections.ny.gov/ or by mailing a paper application to the Onondaga County Board of Elections. Applications must be received by the Board no later than 10 days before the election for mail delivery or the day before the election if picking up in person. Completed absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by the Board within 7 days to be counted. New York election records that are public include voter registration lists (available for purchase by political committees and certain organizations), campaign finance filings (available through the New York State Board of Elections at https://publicreporting.elections.ny.gov/), candidate filings and petitions, and official election results by precinct. Voter registration data includes name, address, party affiliation, and voting history (whether a person voted, not for whom), but excludes birthdates and other personal details.
