To register, you must be a U.S. Citizen, a Colorado resident for at least 22 days before the election, and at least 16 years old (though you cannot vote until age 18). A valid Colorado driver's license or ID number is required, or the last four digits of your Social Security number. Since this is an unincorporated community, it does not hold municipal elections for mayor or city council. Residents vote in Boulder County elections, State of Colorado elections, and federal elections. Local voters also participate in the Niwot Local Improvement District elections, a special district that provides limited services and is governed by a board elected by property owners within the district boundaries. Colorado is a universal mail ballot state, meaning all active registered voters automatically receive a mail ballot for every election. Ballots are typically mailed 18-22 days before Election Day. State legislature races include all 65 Colorado House of Representatives seats (two-year terms) and approximately half of the 35 Colorado Senate seats (four-year staggered terms). Boulder County will elect county officers including County Commissioners (District 1 or 2 depending on rotation), County Clerk and Recorder, County Assessor, County Sheriff, County Treasurer, County Surveyor, and County Coroner, most serving four-year terms. Ballot issues may include state constitutional amendments, state statutory measures, county measures, and special district questions for entities serving the community. Election records that are public in Colorado include voter registration lists (available for purchase for political purposes), campaign finance reports filed with the Colorado Secretary of State at www.tracer.sos.colorado.gov, candidate filings and statements, precinct-level election results, and ballot issue information. Individual voter history (which elections a person voted in, but not how they voted) is public record. Ballot secrecy is absolute in Colorado, how any individual voted is never disclosed. To request an absentee/mail ballot in Colorado, simply ensure you are registered to vote at your current address; mail ballots are automatically sent to all active registered voters.
