New York residents can register to vote online at www.ny.gov/services/register-vote or through the state Board of Elections at www.elections.ny.gov. Registration must be completed at least 25 days before an election. To register, applicants must be U.S. Citizens, at least 18 years old by election day, residents of New York and the county for at least 30 days before the election, and not incarcerated for a felony conviction. Acceptable identification includes a driver's license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number. As an unincorporated hamlet within the town of Nunda, Rexville does not hold separate municipal elections for mayor or city council. Instead, residents vote in town of Nunda elections for Town Supervisor, Town Council members, Town Clerk, Highway Superintendent, and other town offices. These town elections take place in odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The next Nunda town elections will be held in November 2025. Local voters can find their assigned polling place by contacting the county Board of Elections or using the New York State polling place locator at voterlookup.elections.ny.gov. Polling places are assigned based on election district and residence address. Under New York election law, certain election records are public including voter registration lists (available to candidates and political committees with restrictions), campaign finance disclosure reports filed with the state Board of Elections, candidate petition filings and party designations, and precinct-level election results. These can be accessed through the county Board of Elections or the state Board of Elections website. In the November 2024 presidential election, Steuben County reported voter turnout of approximately 63-67% of registered voters, with roughly 35,000-38,000 ballots cast out of approximately 56,000 registered voters countywide. The county's results leaned Republican, consistent with its historical voting patterns. Looking ahead to the November 3, 2026 general election, voters here will decide several important races. At the state level, New York will hold gubernatorial elections in 2026, with the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and Comptroller all on the ballot. All 150 seats in the New York State Assembly and all 63 seats in the State Senate will also be contested. New York's U.S. Senate seat currently held by Kirsten Gillibrand will not be up in 2026 (next in 2024), but Chuck Schumer's seat will be contested in 2028. All of New York's 26 U.S. House seats will be on the ballot in 2026, including the district serving the area (currently New York's 23rd Congressional District, though boundaries may change with redistricting). At the Steuben County level, various Steuben County offices including County Legislature seats, possibly District Attorney, Sheriff, and County Clerk may be contested depending on term schedules. Town of Nunda offices will not be on the ballot in 2026 as those elections occur in odd-numbered years. To request an absentee ballot in New York, voters must submit an application to the Steuben County Board of Elections. Applications are available at www.elections.ny.gov or from the Steuben County elections office. Absentee ballot applications must be received by the Board of Elections no later than 10 days before the election if requesting by mail, or the day before the election if applying in person. Valid reasons for absentee voting include absence from the county on election day, illness or disability, residence in a hospital or care facility, or detention in jail awaiting trial. New York does not have universal no-excuse absentee voting for all voters, though recent laws have expanded access.
