The Davis Police Department, Woodland Police Department, and West Sacramento Police Department each maintain jurisdiction over their own municipalities while coordinating with the Sheriff's Office on broader concerns.

The registration deadline is 15 days before any election for online, mail, or in-person registration, though California also offers conditional voter registration up through Election Day at vote centers. In the November 2024 presidential election, Yolo County reported approximately 63% voter turnout with about 88,000 ballots cast from roughly 140,000 registered voters. The area's small population contributes a few hundred votes to that total. On November 3, 2026, voters will decide several significant races: the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Alex Padilla (Class III, elected 2022, seeking full six-year term in 2026 if he runs), all California constitutional offices (Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, Board of Equalization), State Senate District 3 and Assembly District 4 seats, Yolo County Supervisor District 2, Yolo County Sheriff, District Attorney, and potentially local measures including school bonds or parcel taxes for Esparto Unified School District. California is a universal vote-by-mail state. All registered voters automatically receive a mail ballot approximately 29 days before each election, which can be returned by mail (postmarked by Election Day), at secure drop boxes throughout Yolo County, or at any vote center. Voters can also choose to vote in person during the early voting period (starting 10 days before Election Day) or on Election Day itself at any county vote center.
